How to make a Smurf Face Cake.

Soon it's going to be the 11th of November. Do you guys know what is special about that?
Can you make a guess? If you do - let me know..

On to the cake..
I posted this cake last week on my Face book page promising to share the progress pictures soon but wasn't able to do that yet..

I made this smurf face for a  seven year old Doran for a friend's friend.  It's all buttercream unlike my fondant cakes.

This is my Light and Fluffy vanilla cake with Vanilla Buttercream.

Here you can see I have two 8" rounds and one 6" round.

Recently, some one asked me how do I quote my servings for novelty cakes?
I needed an 8" cake so I baked a 9" recipe. With all the carving I was left with an 8" cake servings. Approximately. That's how.
You have to look closely at the design and understand how much you are going to loose and quote accordingly. It's better to error on the side of more than less.

Here's a picture from the internet that I used as a guide.
I first torted my cakes in half and layered them all with buttercream. So now I had 4 layers of 8" rounds.
I stacked three of them here. But the third layer was the domed part of the second cake.  Makes sense? I hope so..
This is the 6" cake - I cut a big V right in the middle and used that V for the head/cap.
Here you see I have 3 x 8" layers + the V shape I cut from the 6" layer.
I cut another circle with a cookie cutter and placed that on the cap to shape as the picture above.
Next crumb coat and chill for a few hours.
You can add one more coat of buttercream and then cover with fondant. OR
Two more coats of buttercream in the appropriate colors..
Once smooth - add details - I preferred fondant, but you could do it with butter cream too
And that's it.. Easy, wasn't it..  Time consuming but easy..!

Smoothing the buttercream does take a long time for me since I do very few buttercream cakes.
But I sure enjoy the challenge.
And so, finally there's my Smurf Face cake..

So, did you guess what is the 11th of November? and why is it special for this blog?

Thanks for stopping by.
