I recently did this iPhone cake with a face book screen.
It was a gift from a wife for her husband’s 30th Birthday - I believe he is crazy about his iPhone and spends most of his time on Facebook!!!
It was my first... and I honestly thought it would be a lot of work but it wasn't.
Here's what I did.
Here's what I did.
- One day ahead I printed out the template for the Facebook logo and the necessary icons in the size I wanted them on the cake. I traced these out on parchment paper.. then cut these out - Yes! the F a c e b o o k was cut individually in the size I wanted. like you see in the picture below..
- I rolled out some white gum paste for the Facebook logo and some grey for the buttons fairly thin.. Let it dry for about 15 mins so it’s a bit firm but not hard. . Then I placed the parchment paper cut out alphabets on the gum paste; used an exactor knife and cut them out. Did the same with all the buttons. i just let these dry.
By the way, if I had to do an iPhone cake with the iPhone logo's I'd use the same method. - For the cake - I baked a Chocolate cake 9x13 inch.
I did not want the cake tall so I baked a single 2 inch layer but split it and iced it in between like any two layer cake. I cut out about 1/4 inch lengthwise from both sides to get the long and slender look (Next time I think I'd cut out 1/2 inch)
If you’re comfortable you can cut out a small deep circle for the "ON" switch and the top sound line. Just a slight depth..
Then crumb coated and covered it in black fondant..(I used Chocolate fondant and added black to it) - Next I measured the width and length of the white fondant for the screen. You need to be careful when placing it on the cake to avoid stretching. A good tip here is - to use a tray to handle the fondant instead of your hands.
- After that it was easy.. Just placed the necessary details based on the required design. Like the blue strip, the logo, buttons etc....
- I used my gumpaste extruder for the long thin roll around - this gives the screen that sunk in look. You know what i mean?
The cake was delivered and well appreciated by the couple. The husband was so happy and fascinated with the cake, he used it as his profile picture on Face book !! The wife sent me this note on Facebook later.
From Amani Levi ---- this cake was the best cake i could ever think of! full of taste, absolutely marvelous in details and a one of a kind! thank you veena for making it just perfect!
This cake was definitely fun to make. Now I look forward to making the iPhone with the iPhone logos too. A bit extra work but still fun I'm sure...
