Crossword And Fishing Cake

Recently I was asked to make a 60th Birthday cake for someone's Dad.
Some of my customers give me the liberty to decide on the design, this give me the opportunity to exercise my own creativity.
I was told that his father loves two things very dearly. Fishing and  Crosswords.
Now this was a small 6 inch cake, which means; I could do either a Cross-word or a Fishing theme.
I couldn't make up my mind and decided to do both. What do you think?

Here are a few pictures of the process. It really is a simple cake so don't think it needs much explaining.
For the stones - I rolled the brown fondant between my fingers but not too smooth.
The Fish I did free hand but I know that you can buy molds to make these too.

As you can see, I kinda of marbled the fondant. Then placed a small ball of dark blue on the top of my marbled blue and this is the effect I got.
Here are the three shades of Green I used for the grass and greens.
Just rolled the greens into cones and shaped randomly.
Now the fish.

Don't forget to add some other creatures with the fish... gives it a more depth.
For the crossword I just took a small square cutter and cut black and white fondant squares. The size of your square cutter will depend on the size of your cake.
Next I added the figure fishing number 60.  I placed a gum paste pencil in his hand.
For the fishing line I just used a cookie stick and fondant.
To make the figure I used the same techniques I show in my video on 'How to make a Golfer/ Gum paste man' on my website.
And that's all there is to it.

This is the lovely notes I received from the son about the cake. Really makes me happy when customers take the trouble to give you feedback.

Message to me- It was a blast! My dad is still excited about the surprise, the cake was wonderful! Everyone loved it! I posted a picture on my FB profile
Message on Facebook -  The cake was the highlight of the party! Everyone loved it and loved eating it! The kids especially likes eating the fish... Thanks Veena :-)
