This was ordered by his girlfriend for him as a surprise. He absolutely loved it.
The water on the waves is Royal Icing.
Here are a few progress pictures I clicked that I thought might help you.
I started with an 8" cake baked in two loaf pans. You can use the same size - my loaf pans were different sizes.
I cut off the domes and stacked them together.
Next I rounded off the edges ..
In front too..
Used the extra trimmings to complete the behind. If you have the same size loaves then you won't need to do much patching..
I moved the cake to the cake board that I was going to use.
This is my homemade Black fondant - I have the recipe for this right here on my blog. There is a free version of this recipe as well as a PDF with progress pictures and trouble shooting.
I used the extra cake trimmings to make some waves. Crumb coated and second coated the Submarine. I added a strip of the black on the top to add more character.
Then rolled my Black homemade fondant to about less than 1/4 inch thickness.
Covered the cake. Added more character with my tools.
Marbled some white and blue to cover the waves.
Here's a top view of the waves - I used the left over black fondant to add more details.
A pop stick works to make these tall antennas.
Continue with details. Used Royal Icing to highlight the waves and Viola................!
Of course a submarine had to be with a sailor / birthday boy..! right?
Some more pictures....
From behind..
Well, I do hope you like it.
Thanks for stopping by.
