Decorating Sugar Cookies - Christmas Cookies

Decorating cookies with Fondant and Royal icing - Christmas Tree cookie, Christmas cane cookie, Santa glove cookies,  Santa Boots, Snowman cookie, Christmas bell cookie and Christmas Star cookie.

Here are a few cookies I decorated for Christmas.
My sugar cookie recipe can be found here.

To decorate my cookies in fondant I like to paste the cookie stick on the surface held with a little cookie dough.

I like how the raise cookie gives a 3D effect  when I decorate them with fondant.

Of course if I choose to decorate the cookies in Royal Icing then its the usual flat surface with or without stick.
I usually brush the cookie stick with egg wash, that way they stick to the cookie like glue, and do not fall off the stick when the kids are eating.
To place the stick, I prefer to chill the cookies for 15 minutes so they hold their shape well.
Then just place my hand on the cookie and slide the cookie stick under, as shown here.

I think the pictures shown below with the numbers should be good enough explanation to what I have done. Feel free to ask any questions if you need more help.

To decorate the Christmas cane and socks cookie with Fondant

To decorate the Santa Gloves with Fondant

To decorate the Christmas Bell cookie with Fondant
To decorate the Cookies with Royal Icing -
Outline the cookies and make sure you wait for at least an hour before you flood them. That way you can be sure they will not over flow.
If you have to flood the cookies with more than one color, as in the case of the cane here, do not over flood the first color (red). That way when you add the second color (white stripes) the cookie will not over flow..

  And .....

Here are the Christmas tree cookies - two in fondant and two in Royal Icing.

Here are the Christmas Cane, Gloves, and Santa Boots in Fondant and Royal Icing.

Here the snowman in black hat is fondant and the two in red hats are royal icing.

And the whole batch in Fondant and Royal Icing.

Merry Christmas to you all. Thanks for stopping by.
Until Next time - Happy Cookie decorating

  1. These are great!
I was just wondering, if I were to decorate the cookies with icing, would they be dry enough to put little plastic baggies over them?

    1. Yes, of course sopjie. If you see the very first picture on this post - all the cookies are packed in plastic baggies and ready to go. It is important that you give them sufficient time to dry completely.
      Hope this helps.

  2. Hi Veena, your cookies look amazing!Do you make your own Royal Icing? I am a bit nervous using or even making Royal Icing on cookies as I am a complete novice. How far in advance can you make these cookies when decorated with fondant or Royal Icing? What is the best way to store them so they remain fresh? Thanks in advance!

    1. Sorry for the delay in replying to your message. Must have missed the comment.

Sugar cookies last usually for 3 weeks. I make the first day, decorate the next two days depending on the design. It is best to give the cookies sufficient time to dry before you package them.

I do make my own Royal Icing. The recipe can be fond under my page Recipes Filling and frostings.

Royal Icing can be intimidating at first, but do give it a try and practice a lot.
      Hope this helps
